I love the Samsung UN46D8000 television’s appearance: an extremely narrow bezel that virtually disappears when a vivid high-def and/or 3D image is on the screen. It’s outstanding. I do not, however, like the four-legged stand that Samsung supplies with their higher-end models. I also own a Samsung UN46C6400, which has a flat pedestal base, which I find much nicer. (That’s also a great TV, but doesn’t have 3D.) The stand on the UN46D8000 is a bit flashy with its chrome finish, and yet at the same time I find it a little cheesy, because the metal is obviously plastic. They went to such pains to create a minimalist frame around the UN46D8000 TV and then put it on this stand that draws too much attention to itself. Of course if you’re going to mount this on the wall it won’t matter and it will look amazing. If I had it to do over I might even opt for the D7000, which has the flat base, but I don’t believe that model has local dimming (not sure it would matter that much, however), and it’s cheaper.

The UN46D8000 ‘s picture is superb, but what blew me away was the 3D. The only 3D I’ve ever seen was Avatar at an IMAX theater. I expected the 3D on the TV to be of lesser quality than that for some reason, but it was in fact superior! I wore the battery-operated glasses that I got free in a bundle with some 3D Blu-Rays. I also got a free Samsung 3D Blu-Ray player. Both of these were included if I bought the TV from Amazon, and I know the same deal is available at some other retailers, but I’m not sure how long it’s going on. And I originally found a cheaper price on Amazon through another retailer, but once I factored in the bundle by getting it from Amazon directly, they had the best price.

One other thing: The 3D glasses are tinted, so whatever calibration settings you use, create a second setup with higher backlighting and brightness to compensate for the darkness wearing the glasses. You can customize up to four calibrations, one each for the four picture modes of Standard, Natural, Movie, and Dynamic. I used CNET’s settings for Movie mode, and then copied them over to Dynamic mode with more backlight/brightness for 3D viewing. Then I can just push the Tools button to easily jump between modes.

Set-up and web connection was easy, although I am not impressed with most of the “Smart TV” content. The web browser does not work with many of my favorite websites. The QWERTY keyboard is a little hard to use and the bluetooth pairing required that the keyboard be held within 5-inches of the Samsung UN46D8000 TV. This was not mentioned anywhere in the user manual.

Strikingly good 2D picture quality. I have never seen black so black. I have not tried the 3D mode yet, but if it is as good as the 2D, it will be great.

Also, the code that would allow the Samsung UN46D8000 TV off/on function with my A/V receiver remote cannot be found. Samsung says it is the A/V manufacturer’s problem, and they say it’s Samsungs. Go figure.
